Emotion Color Mapping

Type: Activity

Goal: Help clients identify and express emotions visually using colors.

Duration: 15-20 minutes

Audience: Teens and Adults

Steps:

  • Ask the client to list 3 to 5 emotions they currently feel.
  • For each emotion, choose a color that represents it.
  • Draw simple color blocks or a mood circle.
  • Discuss why each color was chosen and what it means to the client.

Therapist Notes: Use this as a warm-up before deeper emotional processing.

Thought Reframing Challenge

Type: Game

Goal: Build cognitive flexibility by reframing negative automatic thoughts.

Duration: 20-25 minutes

Audience: Adults

Steps:

  • Write one stressful thought.
  • Rate belief strength from 1 to 10.
  • Create one balanced alternative thought.
  • Rate belief strength again after reframing.
  • Repeat for 2 to 3 thoughts.

Therapist Notes: Works well with CBT-focused counseling sessions.

Grounding Through Five Senses

Type: Activity

Goal: Reduce anxiety and bring attention back to the present moment.

Duration: 5-10 minutes

Audience: All clients

Steps:

  • Name 5 things you can see.
  • Name 4 things you can feel.
  • Name 3 things you can hear.
  • Name 2 things you can smell.
  • Name 1 thing you can taste.

Therapist Notes: Useful during panic, overwhelm, or high stress moments.

CBT Thought Record

Type: Game

Goal: Identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with balanced alternatives.

Duration: 20-30 minutes

Audience: Teens and Adults

Steps:

  • Describe a recent stressful situation in one sentence.
  • Write the automatic thought that came up.
  • Rate emotion intensity from 1 to 10.
  • List evidence supporting and not supporting the thought.
  • Write a more balanced replacement thought.
  • Re-rate emotion intensity and discuss the change.

Therapist Notes: One of the most widely used CBT activities in counseling sessions.
